The rental car got cheaper after you booked. Rebook it.
Rental car rates move more than airfares, and most reservations are pay-at-pickup with free cancellation. That makes a rental car the easiest booking in your trip to rebook for less, if something is watching the rate.

Pay-at-pickup versus prepaid
- Pay at pickup (the default on most rental sites): nothing has been charged, and the reservation can usually be cancelled at no cost up to pickup. A lower rate means book the new one, cancel the old one, done.
- Prepaid rates are cheaper up front but carry a cancellation fee or are non-refundable. Work out whether the drop beats the fee before you move.
The order to do it in
- Open the rental company's site and price the same car class, location and dates. Rates differ by site, so check the company's own site and the site you booked on.
- Book the cheaper reservation first.
- Cancel the original. Keep the cancellation email.
- Replace the confirmation number on your calendar. If you forward the new confirmation to AI Calendar, it updates the trip and keeps the old number in the event's history.
Nobody cancels the old reservation for you. AutoSlash's own FAQ says so about its service, and it is true of every tracker: the cancel step is yours.
A worked example
A midsize car at Phoenix Sky Harbor for a Thanksgiving week, booked in August at $412 pay-at-pickup. In October the same car at the same counter is $338. Book the $338 reservation, cancel the $412 one, and the $74 stays in your account. It took three minutes because something noticed.
What watches the rate for you
| Option | Cost | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| AutoSlash | Free (earns a commission on bookings through its links) | Tracks a reservation, applies coupons and discount codes, emails you when it finds a lower rate; you rebook. Works on reservations booked elsewhere. |
| Checking by hand | Your time | Re-price the car every week or two before the trip. |
| AI Calendar Deal Alert | Part of Individual ($79/yr) and Household ($99/yr) | Watches the rental car already on your trip, alongside the flights and the hotel, and shows the rebooking steps with the new rate and the confirmation number to cancel. |
AutoSlash's details were read from its site on October 14, 2026. AutoSlash is good at what it does; the case for Deal Alert is having the car, the hotel and the flights watched in the one place that already holds the confirmation numbers.

Questions people ask
- Is a lower rate on another site worth switching for?
- Often, yes, if the new reservation is also free to cancel. Check that the new rate includes the same taxes and fees; some sites show the base rate only.
- What about a car I prepaid?
- Compare the drop to the cancellation fee. If the fee eats the saving, leave it and let Deal Alert keep watching; a bigger drop may come.
