The hotel price dropped after you booked. Here is how to rebook for less.
Hotel rates change daily, and a room booked at a refundable rate can be rebooked at the new price with nothing lost. The only trick is noticing. Here is how to check, and what watches for you.

Refundable or not: the only question that matters
A refundable rate (“free cancellation until…”) can be cancelled and rebooked at any lower price before the deadline. A non-refundable rate, usually 10% to 20% cheaper, cannot. If you tend to book early, the refundable rate plus a price watch often beats the non-refundable discount, because you keep the option to rebook when the rate falls.
The order to do it in
- Price the same room type and dates on the hotel's own site and on the site you booked through. Member rates and “pay at property” rates often differ.
- Book the cheaper room first, at a refundable rate if you can.
- Cancel the original before its free-cancellation deadline. Keep the confirmation.
- Forward the new confirmation to your calendar so the trip has the right confirmation number and check-in window.
How often does this happen?
Often enough to be worth watching. Ratepunk, a hotel-rate comparison site, published data saying that in 57% of the bookings it tracked the price fell after booking (that is their figure from their data; we have not verified it). Rates for popular dates can also rise, which is why the refundable rate matters: you keep the lower of the two.
What watches the rate for you
| Option | Cost | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Pruvo | Free app | Hotels only: forward your booking and it alerts you when the same room is cheaper, so you rebook. |
| KAYAK price alerts | Free | Alerts on a saved hotel search; KAYAK's own advice for after booking is to use the free-cancellation filter so you can rebook. |
| Checking by hand | Your time | Re-price the room every week before the free-cancellation deadline. |
| AI Calendar Deal Alert | Part of Individual ($79/yr) and Household ($99/yr) | Watches the hotel already on your trip, with the flights and the rental car, and tells you when the drop is worth it, with the rebooking steps and the cancellation deadline it read from your confirmation. |

Questions people ask
- Does rebooking lose my loyalty points or upgrade?
- A new booking is a new reservation, so a confirmed upgrade or a special request may not carry over. Call the hotel after rebooking if one matters to you.
- What about a room booked through a package or points?
- Package rates and award stays have their own rules; Deal Alert flags the drop and leaves the decision to you.
